Course Overview:
This training course is designed to provide an overview of FHWA’s Signalized Intersections Informational Guide, Second Edition (2013), with an emphasis on the policies, procedures, and practices utilized in the State of Florida.
The guide was prepared as an introductory document, providing information on evaluating the safety, design, and operations of signalized intersections. It takes a holistic approach, considering the safety and operational implications of a particular treatment on all system users.
This six-hour course has been structured to follow the guide and includes discussions of the principles of user needs and human factors, multimodal accommodations, elements of geometric and traffic safety design and operation, safety and maintenance practices, and a wide variety of treatments, techniques, and strategies to address existing or anticipated problems at the corridor, approach, and individual movement levels. Recognizing some of the unique issues and requirements found within Florida, information from the Guide will be supplemented with Florida-specific details, with references to applicable Florida documents and standards. In addition, updated details from the 11th Edition of the MUTCD and the latest version of PROWAG are included.
This training series is sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Safety Office and brought to you through the Florida Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Center. The FDOT’s safety training workshop aims to equip FDOT employees, as well as local agency staff and consultants, to establish a safety culture, increase safety knowledge, and develop the skills needed to effectively improve safety and reduce fatalities, injuries, and crashes in Florida.
Target Audience
This training is intended for professionals responsible for the design, management, maintenance, or operation of traffic signals, particularly within Florida. The course is most relevant for design engineers, traffic operations engineers, planners, and advanced technicians working in public agencies or consulting firms.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the fundamental principles of signalized intersection safety and operations, including human factors and user needs
- Identify key considerations for geometric design, signal design, and multimodal accommodations at signalized intersections
- Understand methods for collecting and analyzing safety and operational data, including qualitative and quantitative evaluation techniques
- Apply tools and processes used to diagnose intersection performance and identify potential improvements
- Recognize a range of system-wide, intersection-wide, and movement-specific treatments to address safety and operational issues
- Understand how Florida-specific guidance, standards, and tools are applied in signalized intersection analysis and design
