Micromobility refers to small, lightweight vehicles operating at speeds typically below 25 km/h (15 mph) and driven by users. These include bicycles, e-bikes, scooters, e-scooters, and other similar devices. While micromobility has numerous sustainability benefits, there are challenges that need to be addressed to maximize its positive impact. Meanwhile, the emergence of micromobility increases speed variation among roadway users and conflict points at intersections, leading to several safety issues. Furthermore, the rise in micromobility vehicle ownership has created a subculture of new vulnerable road users, introducing numerous safety concerns for both children and adults, while integrating into the modern transportation ecosystem. This webinar will describe the safety and sustainability challenges of micromobility and discuss possible solutions to ease the challenges and enhance the positive impacts of micromobility.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the key challenges and explore sustainable solutions in micromobility to enhance a comprehensive understanding in multimodal transportation planning and management.
  • Develop and apply innovative, practical approaches to improve urban mobility within the context of micromobility.
  • Understand how micromobility integrates into modern transportation systems by reviewing case studies and examples.
