What is sustainable transportation? It is one of the current buzzwords we often hear today without a clear consensus on what it really means. Many different things that claim to be a part of a sustainable transportation system are either not really sustainable or actually do things that reduce safety.
This presentation intends to shed light on what sustainable transportation is from the perspective of the Safe System Approach. It also will demonstrate that the Safe System Approach really is a significant paradigm shift in how we should view transportation. And the presentation will conclude with a discussion of how improving transportation safety is the only way to make transportation sustainable.
Learning Objectives

▪️ Explain how the Safe System Approach represents a fundamental shift in transportation planning and decision-making focused on preventing fatal and serious injury crashes.
▪️ Identify ways that improving transportation safety directly supports the long-term sustainability of transportation systems and communities.
