This presentation discusses new perspectives and technology tools for improving the general practices on signal timing and coordination. The first part of the presentation will discuss four areas of critical needs with the current signal timing practice. Specifically, the four critical areas are: (1) managing the complete signal timing plan data for easy visualization and modification; (2) performing bandwidth-based optimization without traffic volumes; (3) diagnosing signal-timing errors and collecting synchronized vehicle trajectories on time-space diagrams; and (4) assessing the quality of signal timing using a quantitative performance index. The second part of the presentation will discuss existing and emerging technologies and tools to address these critical needs. The presentation will also include several case studies to demonstrate the applications of these technology tools.
