This workshop will provide participants with some tools for addressing roadway departure crashes, including an overview of roadside safety design. Topics covered in this workshop include a discussion of the roadway departure crash problem and the engineering countermeasures and roadside design elements that can help reduce crash potential and crash severity.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

◾ Describe the roadway departure crash problem
◾ Identify practices and proven safety countermeasures to mitigate roadway departures
◾ Identify roadside design strategies to optimize safety within practical limitations.
◾ Identify factors affecting the proper placement of roadside hardware.
◾ Understand performance characteristics of different barriers and barrier end treatments.
◾ Understand how to calculate barrier length of need.

Instructor Bio:

Tori Brinkly has a BS in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and is an Oregon-licensed PE. She started her Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) career concentrating in traffic and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and returned to her passion in traffic safety through positions in Oregon and Western Federal Lands. Tori has many years of experience working with Federal Land Management Agencies (like NPS and USFS), Tribal Nations, and local agencies in the areas of traffic and safety. She joined the FHWA Resource Center in 2018 and works with her counterparts across the nation on safety initiatives and technical assistance in areas such as roadway departures, roadside safety design, rural road safety, and the systemic safety process.

To earn Professional Development Hours (PDHs) or a Certificate of Completion for each recorded webinar, you must view the entire webinar. After viewing, please send an email to FloridaLTAP@usf.edu with your name and the name of the webinar you viewed. The Florida LTAP Center will follow-up within 2-3 weeks.

Each session will award 2.0 PDHs. A total of 8.0 PDHs can be earned for fully viewing all 4 recordings.
