Course Overview
This webinar highlights how Florida’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program directly supports FDOT’s Target Zero initiative – a statewide, data-driven effort to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries. Participants will explore how improving safety around schools plays a critical role in advancing this goal, particularly for vulnerable road users.
The session begins with an overview of Target Zero and the Safe System Approach, including the key factors contributing to serious crashes in Florida and the importance of addressing driver behavior, roadway design, and speed management together.
Participants will also review Florida-based case studies that show measurable impacts on driver behavior and compliance, including the use of school zone speed enforcement, signage, and community messaging to support safer conditions. The session emphasizes the need to address both sides of the roadway environment – influencing driver behavior while equipping students with the skills to navigate traffic safely.
Finally, the webinar introduces practical tools and a step-by-step framework for local implementation, including walkability assessments, the SRTS “5 E’s,” and guidance on forming local task forces, securing funding, and advancing community-supported safety improvements.
Target Audience:
This webinar is intended for transportation professionals involved in the planning, design, and operation of roadways near schools, including traffic engineers, planners, public works staff, and local and state agency personnel. It is also relevant for school administrators, law enforcement, and community stakeholders supporting Target Zero and Safe Routes to School efforts.
