Pavement Preservation History 101 & Asphalt Emulsions Milestones

The Florida LTAP Center in partnership with the Florida Pavement Preservation Council presents the “Pavement Preservation Wednesday” Webinar Series.

This webinar will focus on the history of roads and the pavement preservation industry. With a better understanding of the origins of our roadway network and where we’ve come from, attendees will be better able to move forward. The first half of the 90-minute webinar will delve into how roads and asphalt came about. The second half titled “Asphalt Emulsion Milestones” will walk through the history of Asphalt Emulsion from the 1900s and into the future! Our panelists will discuss how emulsion has evolved over the years – including early emulsions; early emulsion uses, how emulsions migrated to the US from Europe, the evolution and impact of pavement preservation equipment, and will end with the future of emulsions.

Learning Objectives

1. Learn about the history of the roadway network in the United States.
2. Discover how the pavement preservation industry evolved over the last 100 years.
3. Listen as our panelists take us through the history of the foundation for many preservation processes – asphalt emulsions.
4. Engage with the panelists on how the using asphalt emulsions in preservation strategies can extend pavement life.

This webinar is provided at no cost and will award a certificate of training listing the Professional Development Hours (PDHs) or a certificate of completion verifying your attendance. Certificates will be awarded only for fully attending and completing this webinar. A total of 1.5 PDHs can be earned.

Panelist Bios:

Chris Evers is the Executive Coordinator of the Florida Pavement Preservation Council in addition to his role with Pavement Technology Inc., a company he joined in 2012. Chris was instrumental in the founding of the Florida Pavement Preservation Council in 2010. Chris has over 26 years of experience in the heavy highway construction industry. Chris has been involved in all facets of heavy highway educational efforts. He is the Past President of the American Public Works Association Florida Chapter. His involvement in the Florida Chapter has spanned a multitude of Committee Chairs, Task Forces and Officer Positions. In 2012 he founded the Public Works Director Roundtable and he also moderates the International PWD Roundtable at PWX. He has been an active speaker for APWA, FACERS, ASCE, ASHE, ARRA, Florida T2 Center, and the Florida Airports Council. A faithful disciple of Pavement Preservation, he will be our moderator today.

Amy Blaida has worked in the Public Works/Transportation industry for 15 years and has served as the Technical Marketing Manager in Florida for Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions since 2020. Amy holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of South Florida. Amy serves as the FL Chapter Delegate for APWA Council of Delegates, the Sustaining Member Director for FACERS, and serves on the FPCC Advisory Board. Amy serves as Chair of the Leadership Development Team for AEMA.

Aaron Walker has been involved in the asphalt emulsion industry for over 10 years having started work as a Technical Manager for an emulsion manufacturer in Canada. Aaron has since worked with Ingevity (formerly Meadwestvaco) since 2015 where he currently holds the role of Technical Services & Development Manager within the Pavement Preservation division of Ingevity. Aaron holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Brandon University (Canada) and is a member of the board for the Asphalt Emulsion Manufacturers Association (AEMA).
