Load Balancing Method in Prestressed Concrete Design

Load Balancing Method was introduced by Prof. T.Y. Lin of UC Berkeley, CA in the 60’s as an alternative to elastic stress design concept proposed by Eugene Freyssinet of France based on Zero Tension Concept in 1930. The Load Balancing Method simplified the design processes of prestressed concrete structures in general by proposing the portion / percentage of total loads to be balanced by prestressing tendons and maintained zero deflection at balanced stage. Therefore, the magnitude of prestressing force required can be determined very quickly in a more logical manner. The Load Balancing Method is also a very powerful tool in the preliminary design of indeterminate and complex structures.
