Smart Cities – Chattanooga’s Plan for Smart Intersections

April 12, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

At least half of fatal and injury crashes occur at or near intersections. By adding sensors and cameras to monitor the flow of traffic and people through intersections, transportation officials in Chattanooga, Tennessee hope to gather valuable data that will help improve safety and mobility for the traveling public, including drivers, bikers, and pedestrians.

The Federal Highway Administration’s Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment Grant Program (ATCMTD) awards grants to projects using advanced intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies that improve mobility and safety, reduce congestion, and support underserved communities. As a grant recipient, Chattanooga is working to incorporate “smart intersections” throughout the city.

FHWA will host an Innovation Exchange Webinar to showcase Chattanooga’s smart intersections project. Representatives from the City of Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, will discuss their plan to collect and analyze data from up to 100 intersections to evaluate how people and traffic move through them.
