This is Part 1 of a 2-part series. Part 1, “Introduction to Pedestrian RSAs and Crash Trends”, will cover an introduction to the Pedestrian Road Safety Audit. This will be followed by a discussion on pedestrian safety and an overview of pedestrian crash trends.

Road Safety Audits (RSAs) can be used in any phase of project development – from planning and preliminary engineering to design and construction. They aim to discover what elements of the road may present a safety concern and what opportunities exist to eliminate or mitigate the identified concerns. Pedestrian RSAs are very similar to traditional RSAs but with more details about pedestrian safety issues.

One of the key features of the pedestrian RSA is a set of prompt lists. Prompt lists guide the audit team in the field and ensure consideration for key pedestrian safety issues when conducting the audit. A master prompt list provides the team with high-level issues to consider, while detailed prompt lists cover the same issues as the master prompt list but with more specific items and issues to look for during the field review. Together, these prompt lists empower RSA team members with different levels of expertise on pedestrian safety issues to conduct successful RSAs.

This course is intended to support agencies that are interested in conducting pedestrian-focused RSAs. It includes information on safety risks for pedestrians, the Pedestrian RSA process, necessary data, and the roles and responsibilities of the Pedestrian RSA Team. It will include sample RSAs, prompt lists, and additional resources. It is intended to help agencies understand pedestrian safety issues in their jurisdiction and achieve other goals in addition to safety, such as enhancing the quality of life, improving community health, and increasing pedestrian mode share.
