Forts to Ports

May 16 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

The Strategic Highway Network (STRAHNET) and its subset, the Power Projection Platform (PPP), are the nation’s spine for connecting military installations to seaports and airports. In fact, our interstate system was developed with this strategic domestic defense in mind during the Cold War era. These important connectors define the minimum public highway network necessary to support defense deployment. Deficiencies in highways and bridges could impact the efficient flow of military deployments in times of need for national security. Unknown by many, the planning and continued monitoring of this system occurs through many State departments of transportation and regional planning organizations, as well as the Department of Defense (DOD).

Learn how our nation’s security relies on capable highways and bridges to carry troops, equipment and supplies, as well as the intricate planning that occurs.

Join speakers from FHWA’s Office of Federal Lands Highway, North Carolina DOT, and the U.S. Army’s Surface Deployment and Distribution Command – Transportation Engineering Agency (SDDCTEA) as they describe their roles in planning and monitoring of STRAHNET and PPP routes across the nation.
