Course Overview

Broward Safety Action Plan: Safe Streets Design Guidance Manual | Tuesday, September 29, 202610:00 – 11:00AMThis training provides an overview of the Broward Safety Action Plan (BSAP) Safe Streets Design Guidance Manual and how transportation professionals can use it to incorporate safety into the planning, design, and implementation of streets throughout Broward County and beyond. The Safe Streets Design Guidance Manual was developed as part of Broward MPO’s regional effort to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries and provides practitioners with a practical framework for applying the Safe System Approach to roadway planning and design. The Manual helps agencies move beyond a reactive approach to crash reduction by providing guidance for proactively creating streets that reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes for all roadway users.

The Florida LTAP Center recognized the Broward MPO’s innovative work on the Manual as the 2026 winner of the Build a Better Mousetrap Innovative Project Award. This award recognizes the Manual as an innovative transportation practice that provides a practical tool for improving safety and advancing innovative approaches to local transportation infrastructure.

Participants will learn how the Manual connects the goals and strategies of the Broward Safety Action Plan with day-to-day transportation planning and design decisions. The training will introduce the Manual’s approach to identifying safety needs, selecting context-sensitive design treatments, and developing solutions that support safer outcomes for everyone. Topics will include the Safe System Approach, safety-focused corridor and roadway design, speed management, intersection and crossing treatments, pedestrian and bicycle safety, and other proven safety countermeasures. The training will also discuss how practitioners can use the Manual as a resource when planning new projects, evaluating existing streets, advancing safety consistently, and aligning countermeasures with appropriate contexts.
