ADA In Temporary Traffic Control – Building Accessible and Detectable Work Zones

Roadway construction and maintenance activities, utility work, sidewalk repairs, building construction and other activities can temporarily close sidewalks and crosswalks. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) state that when a pedestrian circulation path is temporarily closed, an alternate pedestrian access route complying with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) shall be provided. Join Dr. Ron Eck, Director of the West Virginia Local Technical Assistance Program Center, as he provides an overview of requirements for pedestrian access and presents tools to minimize the impacts of construction, maintenance and utility operations on pedestrians.
