2024 Hurricane Forecast and Solar Eclipse De-Brief

The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA’s) Office of Operations is collaborating with the National Operations Center of Excellence (NOCoE) to host a bimonthly webinar series on road weather management (RWM). These webinars, called the Road Weather Spotlight Series, align with the mission of the FHWA RWM Program to inform stakeholders and improve highway road weather operations.

This webinar will feature speakers Mike McClelland from FHWA and researchers from Purdue University’s Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP). Mike’s presentation will focus on the latest updates for the coming hurricane season. Mike Nicols from Indiana Department of Transportation (DOT) and Purdue researchers Darcy Bullock, Rahul Sakhare, Jairaj Desai, and Jijo Mathew will discuss the roadway mobility impacts observed from truck data analyses during the Solar Eclipse.

About the Speakers:

  • Mike McClelland, FHWA Office of Transportation Operations, Emergency Operations
  • Mike Nichols, Emergency Ops Division Director, Indiana Department of Transportation
  • Darcy Bullock is the Lyles Family Professor of Civil Engineering at Purdue University and serves as the director of JTRP. Bullock is a Registered Professional Engineer in Indiana and has 30 years of experience working closely with academia, transportation agencies, and private sector partners in transportation systems and big data.
  • Rahul Sakhare is a Transportation Research Engineer and earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University in May 2023. His area of expertise spans transportation big data analytics, work zone safety, traffic shock wave theory, and developing scalable performance measures.
  • Jairaj Desai is a Transportation Research Engineer and received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University. He specializes in developing and analyzing big-data-driven visualizations and applications that combine diverse datasets and help draw actionable insights aiding public and private sector stakeholders in operational decision-making and resource allocation.
  • Jijo Mathew is a Transportation Research Engineer and earned a Ph.D. from Purdue University in 2018. He specializes in developing system performance measures that assist agencies and policy makers in undertaking data-driven decisions.
