Course Overview
This 3-part webinar series takes a practical look at bicycle facility design in Florida, combining core principles, design guidance, and real-world application. Participants will gain a better understanding of how criteria, guidance, and engineering judgment come together in practice, along with an overview of key references such as the Florida Design Manual (FDM), the Florida Greenbook, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), and other widely used resources.
The series starts with foundational concepts and bicycle facility types, then moves into on-street and separated facility design. Topics include bicycle lanes, paved shoulders, shared use paths, separated bicycle lanes, bicycle ramps, intersection treatments, and crossings. Throughout the series, we will look at how roadway context, traffic conditions, and level of traffic stress influence design decisions, with a focus on creating safer and more comfortable environments for bicyclists across Florida.
Target Audience
This webinar series is intended for transportation professionals involved in the planning, design, and operation of roadways, including transportation engineers, traffic engineers, planners, public works staff, local and state agency staff, and consultants and designers working on multimodal projects.
Certificates and Credits
This webinar series is provided at no cost and will award a certificate to those fully attending and completing each webinar. Professional Development Hours ( 2.0 PDHs per module | 6.0 PDHs for attending all 3 modules) will be provided to those that request these during registration. AICP CMs (2.0 per session) have been requested (Thanks to the Sun Coast Section of APA Florida!)
AGENDA
Part 1 of 3 – Overview (April 7, 2026)
In this first session, we will introduce the course objectives, key terminology, and foundational design concepts. The following topics will be covered: design criteria vs. guidance vs. engineering judgment; overview of design references such as the FDM, the Florida Greenbook, MUTCD, and national guidance; bicycle facility types; whether bicyclists operate as pedestrians or vehicles; and the concept of level of traffic stress and its role in bicycle facility design.
Part 2 of 3 – On-Street Facilities (April 14, 2026)
In this second session, we will cover the design and application of on-street bicycle facilities. The following topics will be covered: bicycle lanes (including width and placement), paved shoulders, bicycle lane markings and signage, intersection treatments, keyhole lanes, intersection bicycle boxes, two-stage bicycle turn boxes, and considerations for facility selection based on speed, context, and roadway conditions.
Part 3 of 3 – Separated Facilities (April 21, 2026)
In this third session, we will cover separated bicycle facilities and network design considerations. The following topics will be covered: shared use paths, separated (protected) bicycle lanes, horizontal and vertical separation, transitions between facility types, intersection and crossing treatments, connected networks, and how separation and context influence comfort and safety for bicyclists.
