The Florida LTAP Center presents this two-part webinar series on A Transportation Professional’s Guide to Utilizing Video Technology. Using video in our work is no longer optional. If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that there is a lot of badly done video out there. But you don’t have to make them!

In the transportation industry, videos can be an important part of a communication plan, informing the public, agency decision makers, and elected officials about things such as safety improvements, educational campaigns, and upcoming infrastructure improvements.

In this two-part webinar, communication specialist and video producer Kevin Elliott will give you the basics of video production that you can actually do yourself. He will give you an affordable shopping list of video gear, as well as principles of video composition and simple editing tips that don’t require a video production background.

• Teach participants basic video production vocabulary and principles.
• Provide affordable video production gear for video laymen.
• Provide examples of good video composition.
• Provide pointers on filming outside, where many transportation-related videos are filmed.
• Teach principles of video framing, composition, interviewing, the rule of thirds, lighting, and audio.
• Provide accessible editing and publishing options.

At the end of this 2-part course, participants will be able to:
✔ Understand and use appropriate video production vocabulary.
✔ Demonstrate the principles of video composition.
✔ Have a list of affordable video gear.
✔ Create simple videos on their own.
✔ Frame a “standup” video as well as a sit-down interview.
✔ Choose appropriate setting and lighting for quality video.
✔ Use proper audio best practices.


Part 1 of 2 – Gear and Composition (6/16/2021)
The first session will discuss topics including web cams, video conference vs. shooting outside/interviews, using cell phones (and the proper settings), lighting, framing, headspace, and audio.

Part 2 of 2 – Video Production and Editing (6/23/2021)
The second session will discuss topics including how to frame and conduct an interview, how to film outside in a transportation-related setting, editing options, A-roll and B-roll, and music tracks.

This webinar series is provided at no cost and will award a certificate to those fully attending and completing the webinar. Professional Development Hours will be provided to those that request these during registration. Each session in the series will award 1.5 PDHs, and a total of 3.0 PDHs can be earned for fully attending both sessions. Space is limited and Florida local agencies are being given first priority!

Kevin Elliott is a Senior Marketing Specialist at Applied Research Associates. He writes strategic communication plans and manages creative outreach projects for clients including the Federal Highway Administration, the Florida Department of Transportation, the U.S. Air Force, and the National Institute for Standards and Technology, among others. He lives in Panama City, Florida, with his wife, daughter, and 12 chickens.
